Just a friendly reminder that time is running out on the 35,000 SPG offer.
American Express & SPG are at it again! For a limited time you can earn 35,000 points on the personal and business SPG cards. These offers end 4/5/2017.
For the personal Amex SPG you will earn the normal 25,000 SPG points after spending $3,000 in 3 months, and an extra 10,000 bonus Starpoints® after you make an additional $2,000 in purchases within the first 6 months. Spending an additional $2,000 in 6 months shouldn’t be too hard.
The SPG business card comes with a sign-up bonus of 25,000 points after spending $5,000 in 3 months, and the additional 10,000 bonus Starpoints after you make an additional $2,000 in purchases within the first 6 months. If you don’t have an EIN for your business you can apply with your social security # as a sole proprietor.
The $95 annual fees for both SPG cards are waived for first year!
35,000 SPG points might not seem like a lot of points to you, but it’s actually significant because SPG points are just so darn valuable. After meeting the spending requirement for the sign-up bonus and additional bonus, you would have close to 40,000 points. That’s a very good haul.
40,000 points is good for 10 award nights at a category 2 SPG property.
I like to stretch out my SPG points through a cash & points bookings. For example, a category 4 SPG property costs 5,000 points & $75 a night.
And don’t forget that the 5th night is free if you book 4 consecutive award nights. That’s 40,000 points for 5 nights at a category 4 SPG property, like the W in Bangkok.
Another perk of SPG points is that you can transfer them out to airlines at a good ratio. And you will get a bonus of 5,000 points for every 20,000 points transferred! That means 40,000 points transferred out to American Airlines for example would net you 50,000 AA miles.
You can also use your SPG points for Nights & Flights, SPG Moments, room upgrades, Caesars in Las Vegas, and Amtrak. Here’s my previous post on what you can do with 35,000 Starwood points.
I love that Starwood makes it easy to combine your points with another household member, just as long as the addresses have matched in each profile for 30 days.
Also, all award nights count towards SPG elite status. Man, I wish Hyatt had this term.
Both co-branded SPG cards come with 5 nights & 2 stays during elite status. That’s helpful, considering award nights count towards elite status too. They also come with 5x Starpoints per $1 at participating SPG properties, no foreign transaction fees, complimentary premium internet in room, free Boingo wifi, and the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express now comes with lounge access at Sheraton hotels. Nothing like free breakfast or late night snacks while traveling.
I still wish there were category spending bonuses on the SPG cards, but these are some pretty useful perks.

Unfortunately, you can only receive a bonus once per lifetime on American Express personal & business cards. Stinks for those of us who have had these products before. Here’s the term from the application page “Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”
35,000 SPG points is the highest sign-up bonus ever offered on the SPG credit cards. And while you have to spend an additional $2,000 in 6 months to receive the full 35,000 point bonus – it’s worth it.
If you’re eligible for these cards, now is the time to apply. This is especially true with Marriott’s acquisition of Starwood. Eventually, these programs will most likely be combined, and it’s possible that you will be able to transfer points in between each program at some point.
No one knows what’s going to happen to the Amex SPG cards, but they could definitely go away, so this could be the last great opportunity to grab some SPG points through the Amex co-branded cards.
